Nel settembre 2016 Oriana Persico mi invita a scrivere una voce per il progetto ‘UTopia’: un dizionario partecipato, ubiquo e connettivo per reinventare nuovi significati e nuove estetiche dell’utopia contemporanea capaci di riconoscere “la bellezza di ciò che interconnette” (G. Bateson).

Umtopia
s.f. [dal tedesco um (prep. e avv.) e dal greco topos (luogo)]. – In tedesco, Um non ha una propria definizione lessicale, ma una volta sintatticamente associato ad altre parti del discorso apre una moltitudine di scene semantiche. Qui interessa il suo uso come suffisso, quando modifica e riorienta il senso del verbo o del sostantivo al quale viene unito.In particolare, due sono le direzioni di senso che di Um interessano. 1. Quando Um rappresenta lo “stare intorno”: Umwelt è il mondo circostante, l’ambiente; Umschlag è l’involucro; Umschiffung è la circumnavigazione; Umarmung è l’abbraccio. 2. Quando Um rappresenta l’idea del cambiamento: Umzug è il trasloco; Umtausch è lo scambio di beni; Umbilden è il cambiare formazione e professione; Umbauen è il ricostruire un artefatto per modificarlo interamente.
Umtopia è il luogo che ti avvolge e include, il luogo nel quale si sviluppa la vita biologica e sociale, il luogo che occorre costantemente esplorare. Ma è anche il luogo dove tutto muta, dove si passa da una condizione all’altra, dove il conseguente ha origine dal precedente e il senso delle cose lo cogli solamente nella loro continua trasformazione. Umtopia, in altre parole, può essere l’intero pianeta Terra e tutto ciò alla Terra assomiglia: ogni insieme e ogni cosmo in costante mutamento. Ad esempio, Umtopia è la stanza di un artista irrequieto.
Umtopia
noun [From the German um (prep and adv.) and the Greek topos (place)]. – In German, Um does not have its own vocabulary definition, but once syntactically associated with other parts of speech, it opens up a multitude of semantic scenes. Here it concerns its use as a prefix, when it modifies and reorients the meaning of the verb or noun to which it is joined.
In particular, there are two interesting directions of Um‘s sense. 1. When Um represents “being around”: Umwelt is the surrounding world, the environment; Umschlag is the wrap; Umschiffung is the circumnavigation; Umarmung is the embrace. 2. When Um represents the idea of change: Umzug is the moving; Umtausch is the exchange of goods; Umbilden is changing training and profession; Umbauen is rebuilding an artifact to completely modifying it.
Umtopia is the place that encompasses you and includes you, the place where biological and social life is developed, the place you need to constantly explore. But it is also the place where everything changes, where one passes from one condition to another, where the consequent originates from the antecedent and the meaning of things can be understood only in their continuous transformation. Umtopia, in other words, can be the whole planet Earth and all that this Earth resembles: every set and every cosmos in constant movement. For example, Umtopia is the room of a restless artist.
